Rihanna has never been shy about her love of marijuana.

There is no surprise that many musicians consume weed. Rihanna and weed are two terms that can be used in the same sentence because of her love for it.

Rihanna has never been shy about her love of marijuana, but as far as her music goes, there are references that you might have missed and others that were pretty obvious.

Here’s the complete marijuana musical history of Rihanna and weed in her music, going all the way back to Pon de Replay in 2004 and up until even a few years ago.

Rihanna’s History Of Weed Use

Whether you’re pro-weed or anti-weed, no one can deny that singer Rihanna has been a long-time advocate of cannabis. As far back as 2010, Rihanna was spotted with what was presumed to be a joint. In 2011, she reportedly sent her assistant to buy marijuana for her during an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty.

Later that year she performed in front of thousands of fans in Amsterdam wearing (what is presumed to be) a weed crown and sang We Found Love while smoking what many fans believe to be blunt.

In 2012, not only did she perform while smoking what many believe to be cannabis again, but she was also caught on camera inhaling it out of a hookah pipe while attending the Coachella festival.

She’s even spoken out about it on Instagram, where she posted an image of herself smoking a blunt with the caption “Legalize it.”

In 2015, Rihanna told Rolling Stone that she used weed to help her sleep after the birth of her first child, Rumi: “I have a kid now. I’ve been smoking since I was 16 years old; now I’m 26 and having to be more cognizant. I don’t smoke around my daughter; I don’t bring it home. It’s not my thing anymore.”

She also said that smoking helped her manage stress: “I think everyone has his or her own way of handling stress. Drinking is what works for me — but at the same time it doesn’t work for me at all times.”

Rihanna, Weed, And Her Openness About It

Rihanna is one of the most successful artists in the world and she’s also one of the most openly honest about her use of marijuana. The pop star has been open about her love for weed, even going as far as to say she would be dead if it wasn’t for weed.

Rihanna’s marijuana use started at a very young age. When she was 16 years old, she told the press that she smoked weed and had been arrested for possession of it.

She said: “It’s not a drug; it’s a leaf.”

In 2010, Rihanna was caught smoking weed at an airport in Barbados with two other passengers who were also smoking marijuana. There were three bags found in their possession, which were later tested positive for pot.

In 2011, Rihanna was arrested for possession of marijuana at an airport in Singapore after arriving on an international flight from Malaysia. She was released on bail and had to appear in court later that year where she pleaded guilty to the charges against her and received probation and community service hours instead of jail time or fines.

Rihanna’s Public Quotes About Using Weed

Rihanna has been known to be a weed smoker for years. She has talked about it publicly and even in her music.

In 2012, she said on Twitter that she was “rolling a blunt” before going onstage.

In 2014, “Rolling Stone” reported that Rihanna smokes weed every day, sometimes several times a day. She told the magazine that she prefers smoking to drinking because “it’s less harmful.”

She has also talked about getting high with her friends: “I’ll have my friends over and we’ll just sit there and pass it,” she said in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2013.

The singer also told Complex: “I think what people don’t understand is that marijuana relaxes your mind and opens it up more … there are so many different types of strains and ways to consume it.”

“I smoke weed. Do I do other things? Yes. But do I do a lot of drugs? No.” — Rihanna in an interview with Complex

“A lot of people smoke weed and they’re like ‘Oh my God, I’m high!’ It’s just a plant. It’s natural. God made it. You can’t say that it’s bad.” — Rihanna in an interview with Rolling Stone

“I use the word ‘weed’ all the time because I don’t want to be too specific and let people know that I smoke marijuana.” — Rihanna in an interview with Playboy
